Craft Festival, Demonstrations, and Antiques

The Wise Business Association will host the 43rd Annual Wise County Famous Fall Fling in historic downtown Wise, Virginia, October 9-10, 2021. The Fall Fling features bluegrass, country, and gospel music, and celebrates authentic Appalachian arts and crafts with over 135 vendors. You will find wood, pottery, art, photography, candles, antiques, Native American crafts, traditional Appalachian crafts and much, much, more. During the ‘Fling you can also visit with Mark Ramsay demonstrating black smithing, Chuck Miller panning for gold and gems, and James Damron of EK3 Farms showing you the old-timey way he grinds corn.

Saturday: Vendors Open from 9 A.M. – 6 P.M.

Sunday: Vendors Open from 12:00 PM – 5 P.M.

Essay Contest

Thursday, September 30.

Calling writers of all sorts to participate in the 2021 Wise County Famous Fall Fling Essay Contest! This year’s contest is co-sponsored by Gladeville Chapter 171, Eastern Star, Wise, and CSE Insurance. The theme for 2021 is “No Place Like Home”. Prizes will be awarded in each of our two categories: 18 & under and 19 & over. 1st place winners will receive $50. 2nd place winners will receive $15. 3rd place winners will receive $10. All winners will also receive commemorative plaques and a 2021 Fall Fling tee shirt. Contest Winners will be announced and awards will be presented on Saturday, October 9 at 10:00 AM on the stage at Big Glades in downtown Wise. Business Decorating Contest

Monday, September 30.

Local businesses are encouraged to participate and decorate their business tied to this year’s theme, “There’s No Place Like Home”. The theme is broad and you may interpret it however you wish. Judging will be on Friday, October 1st so please have your projects completed by September 30th. Entries will be judged based on creativity, difficulty, and overall appeal of the design. Please let us know if you plan to participate so your decorations can be judged. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in the contest. Winners will be notified on October 4th. Awards will be presented on Saturday, October 9 at 10:00 AM at Big Glades. 1st Prize—$100, 2nd Prize—$75, 3rd Prize—$ 50. The Business Decorating Contest is sponsored by Delores Smith and coordinated by the Town & Country Garden Club. Digital Art Contest

Wednesday, October 6.

🎨  The festival’s 2021 theme is “No Place Like Home”. Please send entries through the Fall Fling Digital Art Contest Facebook Page’s Messenger! This year’s contest is sponsored by Farmers & Miners Bank. This is the Adult Art Contest. Youth Art competitors should contact their art teacher!

**Please read the following guidelines**
Two categories of entry beginning Sept. 16th:
  1. Adult Category: 18 & Older, Non-Professional Artists
  2. Professional Category: An artist that makes income through their work
Only (2) entries per person. Each entry needs: Size, Materials, Title & Date of Completion. Paintings can be watercolor, oils, acrylics or a combination. Drawings can be charcoal, pencil, or pastels. A $100 prize will be awarded in each category. Submissions will close on Wednesday, October 6th at 5:oo PM. Winners will be contacted Thursday and prizes presented at Big Glades in Wise on Friday! Digital Photography Contest

Wednesday, October 6.

Our contest theme this year is “No Place Like Home”. The contest is open in three categories, Youth (under age 18), Amateur, and Proficient. Proficient includes anyone who derives more than 25% of their income as a Professional photographer, or who regularly enters and wins competitions. Entries will be accepted via Messenger on the Fall Fling Digital Photo Contest Facebook page, September 15th through October 6th. Images must be 300DPI and are encouraged to focus on the concept of “home” regarding our festival and/or our region. Please identify the photo’s location, the photographer’s name & age, and the category. Please refrain from including individual’s faces in your shots. Direct your photos toward the unique spirit, memories & beauty of our area. What does home mean to you? **All photos/images submitted must be done so with unrestricted rights for future use by the Wise Fall Fling, the Wise Business Association or affiliated groups** Entries can be shared on the Fall Fling Digital Photo Contest Facebook page through Messenger. LIMIT OF TWO PHOTOS PER CONTESTANT. **PLEASE IDENTIFY YOURSELF WITH YOUR ENTRIES BY NAME, AGE & CATEGORY!**

A $100 prize will be awarded in each category. Submissions will close five o’clock on Wednesday Oct 6th. Winners will be contacted on Thursday & prizes will be presented on Friday! 2021 FCA Fall Fling 5k Race/Walk

Saturday, October 9.

The 2021 FCA Fall Fling 5k Race/Walk begins at 9:00 AM on Saturday, October 9th at the Wise Church of God. Race registration will be held in the Wise Church of God parking lot from 8:00-8:45 AM. Pre-registration cost is $15 (ends on 10/2/21), and registration is $20 on the day of race. Runners will receive a free t-shirt while supplies last. Size XXL shirts are available for an additional $2 and only by pre-registration. A pancake breakfast (details below) will be provided for free to runners with a race bib. Pancake Breakfast

Saturday, October 9.

The Fall Fling Pancake Breakfast will take place at the Wise First Church of God on Main Street from 8:00 AM-11:00 AM on Saturday, October 9th. Breakfast cost is $6.00 and includes: 3 Pancakes, Choice of two sausage patties or 3 strips of bacon, Choice of orange juice or milk and coffee. Runners for the 5K race may show their bib for a free breakfast. All proceeds will benefit the First Church of God Youth Group.

Anything Apples

Saturday, October 9.

Enter your traditional or non-traditional apple pie or apple butter into the Anything Apples contest! Bring entries to the event station at the Inn at Wise to be judged between 9:30 AM-11:00 AM on Saturday, October 9th. Judging will take place the day of. Generous prizes will be given to the top three in each of our categories! This contest is co-sponsored by UVA Wise and Pug’s Orchard and Old Country Store. Pet Contest & Show

Saturday, October 9.

Bring your furry friends along to the Wise County Famous Fall Fling to compete in our annual Pet Contest! ALL pets are welcome! Registration begins at 1:00 PM Saturday, Oct. 9th and the show starts at 2:00 PM. The show will take place on the lawn at Christ Lutheran Church. Entry Fee is $10. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Pet Show will be donated to Pleasant Hill Senior Pet Rescue. The Good Shepherd Trainers will be present at the event to provide training tips and specials for your pet! For more information contact Tabitha at 276-639-2536.

2021 Wise Fall Fling Corn Hole Tournament

Saturday, October 9.

This year’s Corn Hole Tournament will take place at 1:00 PM at the L.F. Addington Gym. Registration is $20 per team. Payouts to first three spots. Blind draw, or bring your own partner. For more information, contact David Schuler at 276-275-9033 or ronaldschuler1@icloud.com. 

Ghost Walk

Saturday, October 9.

Join us during the Fall Fling in downtown Wise for the Ghost Walk by Stone Mountain Adventures! Come ready to hear the creepy history of downtown Wise. We will meet in the lobby of the Historic Wise Inn & then proceed to tour the most haunted spots in downtown Wise. Tour will last about 1 1/2 hours. Wear good shoes and dress weather appropriate. Cost is $10 per person. We will have two walks on Saturday, October 9th, the first departs at 2:00 PM and second departs at 4:00 PM. Health Wagon

Saturday, October 9-10.

The Health Wagon will be set up during the ‘Fling on Spring Avenue. Receive FREE flu shots, blood pressure and blood sugar checks, Covid-19 vaccines, and rapid antigen tests. For more information at 276-439-1352.

Wise Fire Department Firefighter Obstacle Course for Kids

Saturday, October 9.

This event will take place in the Kids Korner beginning at noon. Children will be grouped by age into two categories: 5-10 and 11-15. Timed competitions will begin at 4:00 PM. Course requires crawling through a pipe, climbing over an age-appropriate wall, and dragging a hose to spray the target. Children must be dressed appropriately and closed-toed shoes are a must (no flip-flops permitted). Parents must sign a consent form before their child can enter the competition.

Kids Korner

Saturday, October 9-10.

Free fire truck rides will take place on Saturday, and it’s all-aboard the Kiddie Train on Sunday. Throughout the weekend kids can enjoy lots of free prizes, free books, basketball games, and the double slide!
