Craft Festival, Demonstrations, and Antiques

The Wise Business Association will host the 41st Annual Wise County Famous Fall Fling in historic downtown Wise, Virginia, October 12-13, 2019.  The Fall Fling features bluegrass, country, and gospel music, and celebrates authentic Appalachian arts and crafts with well over 135 vendors. You will find wood, pottery, art, photography, candles, antiques, Native American crafts, traditional Appalachian crafts and much, much more. Also, on Saturday and Sunday visit with Mark Ramsay demonstrating black smithing, Chuck Miller panning for gold and gems, and James Damron of EK3 Farms showing you the old-timey way he grinds corn.

Saturday: Vendors Open from 9 A.M. – 6 P.M.

Essay Contest

Wednesday, October 2.

Calling writers of all sorts to participate in the 2019 Wise County Famous Fall Fling Essay Contest! This year’s contest is sponsored by Gladeville Chapter 171, Eastern Star, The Town of Wise, and CSE Insurance. As lots of folks schedule homecomings or visits home during the annual Fall Fling, The 2019 Essay Contest topic is “Welcome Home”. Prizes will be awarded in each of our two categories: 18 & under and 19 & over. 1st place winners will receive $50. 2nd place winners will receive $15. 3rd place winners will receive $10. All winners will also receive commemorative plaques and a 2019 Fall Fling tee shirt, with the “Welcome Home” logo. Awards will be presented Saturday, October 12 at 10:00AM on the stage at Big Glades in downtown Wise. Winners will get a call or email advising them to be present if at all possible. Youth Art Contest

The Youth Art Contest is sponsored by Powell Valley National Bank and coordinated through Wise County, Wise County Christian and City of Norton Schools, including Elementary and High Schools. Information and contest rules will be distributed via your child’s school.

Adult Art Contest

Farmers & Miners Bank is sponsoring an Art Contest during this years Fall Fling. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Art work must be dropped off at Farmers & Miners Bank, 331 East Main Street, Wise, by 4:00PM on Tuesday, October 8. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners. 1st place will receive $75. 2nd place – $50. 3rd place – $25. Digital Photography Contest

Our contest theme this year is “Welcome Home”. The contest is open in two categories, Juvenile (under age 18) and Adult (ages 18 & over). Entries will be accepted September 14th through October 9th. Images must be 300DPI and are encouraged to focus on the beauty of our region, natural &/or man made wonders. Please identify the photo’s location, & the photographer’s name & age! Entries can be shared on the Fall Fling Digital Photo Contest’s Facebook page. Judging will take place during the Fall Fling and winners will be announced at the Fall Fling Awards Ceremony, October 12th. A $100 prize will be awarded in each category. NCH Heart-One Cardiac Rehab 5K Race & One Mile Fitness Walk

NCH My Run Rock & Roll Challenge

Norton Community Hospital’s My Run, Walk and Roll is an event for physically challenged (or just out of
shape!) individuals of all ages that will take place alongside the Heart-One Cardiac Rehab 5K Run. Registration at 8:30 AM. Walk starts at 9:00 AM. L.F. Addington Middle School Gym. Registration form can be printed from this website soon; check the Registrations, Rules and Regulations page. This event is not a race! It is an individual challenge, with no set finish line. If needed, participants will be able to use walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobile devices to assist in their navigation of the 250 yards, 1/3, 2/3, or 1 mile flat course. Finisher medals awarded to all participants. Anything Apples

Saturday, October 12.

Bring your traditional apple pie, apple butter, or anything apple dish to the Wise County Courthouse lawn to be judged between 9:00 AM—10:00 AM on Saturday, October 12th. Judging will take place the day of and winners will be announced at noon. Generous prizes will be given to the top three in each category! Rules: 1. No frozen pies. 2. All apple butter must be sealed and in canning jars. 3. Judges have the final decision. Prizes: Traditional Apple Pie: 1st place $50, 2nd place $30, 3rd place $20; Apple Butter: 1st place $50, 2nd place $30, 3rd place $20; Anything Apple: 1st place $50, 2nd place $30, 3rd place $20. Pet Contest

Bring your furry friend along to the Wise County Famous Fall Fling to compete in our annual Pet Contest! ALL pets are welcome. Registration begins at 1:00PM Saturday, October 12,and the show starts at 2:00PM. The show will take place on the lawn at Christ Lutheran Church. Categories are: Largest, Smallest, Prettiest Female, Most Handsome Male, Most Unusual, and Best Dressed. First place in each category will compete for Best in Show! 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category will be awarded. Ribbons and trophies awarded in every category. Ghost Walk

Saturday – Sunday, October 12-13.

Come join us during the Fall Fling in downtown Wise for the Ghost Walk. Come ready to hear the creepy history of downtown Wise. We will meet in the lobby of the Historic Wise Inn and then proceed to tour the most haunted spots in downtown Wise. Tour will last about 1 and a 1/2 hours. Wear good shoes and dress weather appropriate! Cost is $10 per person. We will have two trips per day, first departs at 2:00PM and second departs at 4:00PM. Hosted by Stone Mountain Adventures.

Miss Wise Fall Fling Beauty Pageant

Saturday, October 12.

The 2019 pageant will take place on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Central High School in Norton, Virginia. Beautiful Baby Pageant: 4:00 PM; Little Miss (9 age groups): 5:00 PM; Miss, Teen, Jr. Teen, and Pre-Teen Event: 7:30 PM. No dress required for contestants 12 and under! All contestants competing in the 12 and under divisions will receive a crown, banner, and trophy! Contestants in our Miss, Teen, Jr. Teen Divisions will compete in pageant or prom gown and casual wear. Our Queens will receive a large crown, embroidered banner by Christine Warren, matching scepter, trophy, and recognition at the Wise Fall Fling festival. Apply today!
