Craft Festival, Demonstrations, and Antiques

The Wise Business Association will host the 40th Annual Wise County Famous Fall Fling in historic downtown Wise, Virginia, October 13-14, 2018.  The Fall Fling features bluegrass, country, and gospel music, and celebrates authentic Appalachian arts and crafts with well over 135 vendors. You will find wood, pottery, art, photography, candles, antiques, Native American crafts, traditional Appalachian crafts and much, much more. Also, on Saturday and Sunday visit with Mark Ramsay demonstrating black smithing, Chuck Miller panning for gold and gems, and James Damron of EK3 Farms showing you the old-timey way he grinds corn.

Essay Contest

Wednesday, October 3.

Calling writers of all sorts to participate in the 2018 Wise County Famous Fall Fling Essay Contest! This year’s contest is sponsored by Gladeville Chapter 171, Eastern Star, The Town of Wise, and CSE Insurance. Prizes will be awarded in each of our two categories: 18 & under and 19 & over. 1st place winners will receive $50 and our new “Fabulous 40th” Fall Fling T-Shirt. 2nd place winners will receive $15. 3rd place winners will receive $10. All winners will also receive commemorative plaques. The 2018 Essay Contest topic is “Fabulous 40th”/Fall Fling Memories. Tell us what the Fall Fling means to you and your town! Awards will be presented Saturday, October 13 at 10:00AM on the stage at Big Glades in downtown Wise. Winners will get a call or email advising them to be present if at all possible. Youth Art Contest

Friday, October 5.

This contest is open to all Wise County Middle and High School students. Our theme this year is Fabulous 40th. Information will be given to prospective students via their art teachers. All art needs to be ready to be picked up by Friday, October 5 as judging will take place on Monday, October 8. There will be an award reception Thursday, October 11 at 7:00PM at the Masonic Hall located on Main Street in Wise. This event is open to the public and all participants and teachers are encouraged to attend. Winning art will be displayed at the Masonic Hall on Main Street in Wise. Business Decorating Contest

Tuesday, October 9.

In this annual contest sponsored by Miners Exchange Bank, local businesses are encouraged to participate by decorating their places of business in relation to this year’s theme, “Fabulous 40th”. Entries will be judged based on creativity, difficulty, and overall appeal of the design. The theme is very broad and is open to interpretation. Judging begins for the 2018 Business Decorating Contest on Tuesday, October 9, so please have your projects completed by Monday, October 8. Art Contest

Farmers & Miners Bank is sponsoring an Art Contest during this years Fall Fling. Artists must be 18 or older. Art work must be dropped off at Farmers & Miners Bank, 331 East Main Street, Wise, by 4:00PM on Tuesday, October 9. Ribbons and cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 winners. 1st place will receive $75. 2nd place – $50. 3rd place – $25. Digital Photography Contest

Friday, October 12.

Our contest theme this year is “Scenic SWVA” and this year’s contest is open in two categories, Juvenile (under age 18) and Adult (ages 18 & over). Entries will be accepted on our Facebook page, September 14 through October 12. Images must be 300DPI and are encouraged to focus on the landscape or architecture of Far Southwest Virginia. Entries can be shared on the Fall Fling Digital Photo Contest Facebook page or by sending your photo via messenger to the page. Limit of 2 photos per contestant. Judging will take place during the Fall Fling and winners will be announced at the Fall Fling Awards Ceremony. A $100 prize will be awarded in each category. A third $50 prize will be awarded to a “People’s Choice Award” to be determined by the photo’s “Likes”. Please identify yourself with your entries by age and name. Good luck! NCH My Run Rock & Roll Challenge

Saturday, Oct. 13.

Norton Community Hospital’s My Run, Walk and Roll is an event for physically challenged (or just out of
shape!) individuals of all ages that will take place alongside the Heart-One Cardiac Rehab 5K Run. Registration at 8:30 AM. Walk starts at 9 AM. L.F. Addington Middle School Gym. Registration form can be printed from this website soon; check the Registrations, Rules and Regulations page. This event is not a race! It is an individual challenge, with no set finish line. If needed, participants will be able to use walkers, wheelchairs, and other mobile devices to assist in their navigation of the 250 yards, 1/3, 2/3, or 1 mile flat course. Finisher medals awarded to all participants. Wear a Wise Fall Fling T-Shirt from a previous year and stop by the INFO STAND from 10 AM – 6 PM on Saturday,or til 2 PM on Sunday. Put your name and phone number in the registration box to enter the drawing for a $100 Cash Prize & Gift Certificates from local businesses. Winners will be posted, and names will be announced on the Main Stage at Big Glades during The Fling. Winners not present will be called in order to receive their prizes. Bring your traditional or non-traditional apple pie, apple cake or
apple butter to the Wise County Courthouse lawn to be judged
between 10:00—11:00 AM on Saturday October 13th. Generous prizes will be given to the top three in each category! Pet Contest

Bring your furry friend along to the Wise County Famous Fall Fling to compete in our annual Pet Contest! ALL pets are welcome. Registration begins at 1:00PM Saturday, October 13,and the show starts at 2:00PM. The show will take place on the lawn at Christ Lutheran Church. 2nd Annual Heritage Hall/Fall Fling CAR and BIKE Extravaganza   

Saturday, Oct. 13.

Join us from 2:00PM-6:00PM on Saturday, October 13 for the 2nd Annual Heritage Hall/Fall Fling Car and Bike Extravaganza. The show will take place in the L.F. Addington Middle School Parking Lot. $10 entry fee. 9 classes. Trophies will be awarded to the winner of each class, and to Best of Show. A cruise will directly follow the awarding of the trophies.
